The human capacity for creativity is always fascinating to me... here's a link from Nick Baum to someone making artwork with pennies. I can't imagine how long it took the person to make the final image, but this video shows it being done. Fascinating what people will do.

I have to interrupt the usual writing to briefly rave about my wife's latest artwork. The Vermont State Arts Council has been running a "Palettes of Vermont" program where wooden artist palettes were distributed all across the state for people to paint and display. All sorts of people received them... active artists, school children, hobbyists... lots of different groups. (You can see what some of the early recipients did with them.) Lori received one through Burlington City Arts and, as you can see from the image (click on it for a larger view), she followed the theme of her Inukshuk series to create her palette. She debated about the theme for quite some time, because odds are that most folks here south of the Canadian border won't have a clue as to what an Inukshuk is... although hikers here will certainly have come across cairns up above treeline. In the end, though, she decided that doing an Inukshuk would be something different and remarkable (Seth Godin would be pround!) that most Vermont artists would not do.

So there it is... if you happen to wind up in Burlington sometime between July 11 and August 7, you will be able to see her palette and those of other Burlington artists in an exhibit put on by Burlington City Arts in the Metropolitan Gallery in Burlington's City Hall.

As a writer, I have to confess that I actually deeply miss the days of snail-mail letters and postcards. There is something tangible about a written letter or postcard that is just missing from e-mail. I'll digress on that topic some other time, but suffice it to say that this interest of mine means that I pay special attention to intersections of snail-mail media and electronic media.

Enter PostSecret. As described in this recent article (in PDF) in the National Post, the site is an outgrowth of an art exhibit started back in November 2004. A bit more information is in the original post, appropriately made on January 1, 2005. Some of the comments are also interesting. Essentially, each Sunday Frank Warren posts a subset of the postcards that he has received that have a secret that someone has sent in. (He is planning a book compiling more of them.)

The site itself is quite fascinating. Perhaps part of it is the voyeuristic impulse in all of us.... but the cards are an interesting collection of differences. Some are sad... some are frightening... some are just, well, strange.

Intriguing art project... and I'm not surprised to see the strong response.
